Job Opportunity with the Foundation for Democracy and Sustainable Development

12 Nov

The Foundation for Democracy and Sustainable Development are currently re-designing their website, which will be launched in early December, and are seeking to recruit a contractor who will further populate it with current and relevant content, compile a quarterly newsletter and circulation list in order to alert related organizations and stakeholders to FDSD activities and fresh issues reported or debated on the website, and assist in co-ordinating FDSD events and social media strategy.

FDSD works to equip democracy to tackle the challenges of sustainable development. Current systems of democracy are failing to adequately address sustainable development challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity, inequality and intergenerational justice. At the same time, widespread participation and accountability are necessary to deal with these complex problems. FDSD researches workable reforms, and works with others to inspire and create practical change.

In the first instance the contract offered will be for 12 days work, at a daily rate of £120, between 1 December 2014 and 28 February 2015, with the possibility of renewal. The work may be undertaken wherever the contractor chooses, though there will be desk space available at FDSD’s office, 51 Southwark Street, London SE1, near London Bridge. The contractor will be asked to report fortnightly on activity.

The successful applicant for the contract should have:

  • a further degree (or be undertaking a further degree) in a discipline with relevance to sustainable development and/or the theory and practice of democracy  – and/or relevant practical experience of working in one of these areas.

  • have excellent skills in writing and communication, and in ICT, including preferably experience in the use of WordPress and in social media, and, if possible, InDesign

  • an ability to research through the Internet and other media, identifying issues and debates relevant to FDSD’s mission which may be highlighted and linked on the FDSD website

  • the social and organizational skills necessary to elicit original content from trustees and other stakeholders for the website and newsletter, and to help coordinate participation at events, working to deadlines

The contractor will report to the Chair of FDSD, John Lotherington, and to other trustees as appropriate to particular aspects of the website, newsletter or FDSD events.  The contractor would need to be available for occasional face-to-face meetings in London.

Letters of applications for the contract are invited, highlighting relevant skills and experience, with contact details for two referees, and accompanied by a C.V. They should be sent to or posted to FDSD, Floor One, 51 Southwark Street, London SE1 1RU. The deadline for applications for the contract is Friday 21 November 2014.

The original call for applications may be viewed on the FDSD website.
