Ministers need to develop a clearer overall direction to prevent the impression of a rudderless government, according to MPs.

The Commons’ public administration select committee has published a report criticising a ‘strategic vacuum’ at the heart of the coalition government, which is united around a commitment to reducing the deficit.

A London council has been accused of starting “social cleansing” in the capital by asking a Stoke-on-Trent housing association to take on up to 500 families on housing benefit,the BBC reports. Newham LBC says it can no longer afford to house tenants on its waiting list in private accommodation.

Coalition Has A ‘Catastrophic Lack Of Coherence’, MPs Warn

The lack of a coherent approach to policy making in the coalition could lead to “catastrophic consequences” for the country, according to a committee of MPs.

In a damning report published on Tuesday, the public administration committee said it had “little confidence that government policies are informed by a clear, coherent strategic approach”.
